SO WHAT'S YOUR REAL JOB?

That's the question writers expect. Writers everywhere will tell you the common question they get is "Where do you get your ideas from?" For that, I always go with Orson Scott Card's response: "Joyce Carol Oates sends me her leftovers."

But for writers below the midlist, the question is, "So what's your real job," as though writing is not the hardest work I've ever done.
